NACA'S GOALS AND TACTICS

Access to financial capital gives working people and communities the resources they need to improve their futures. Therefore, NACA has pursued two primary goals throughout its history:
  1. to extend the reach of affordable lending and homeownership to every working person,
  2. to combat discrimination and exploitation of working people by lenders and financial institutions.

These aims are self-reinforcing; the wider the availability of affordable lending, the narrower the market for predatory lending institutions. At the same time, NACA's campaigns have increased the awareness of manipulative lending schemes and forced predatory lenders to invest billions of dollars in affordable lending.

Identifying targets
The relationship between affordable and predatory lending is central to NACA's concept of advocacy. NACA's approach is diamond-hard and crystal-clear: Pick a battle that has the power to change the nature of lending, and fight it to the finish. NACA has not shied away from challenging the heavyweights of the predatory lending industry. Fleet Bank was one of the largest and most aggressive predatory lenders, while The Associates was the largest finance company in the US.

NACA relentless campaigns
NACA has always taken the junk-yard dog approach – once we grab on we never let go no matter how long it takes. Once the fight was joined, NACA became these institutions' worst nightmare, doing whatever it took for as long as it took. This strategy has been a tremendous success—the four-and-one-half-year campaign against Fleet led it to invest billions of dollars in affordable lending and pay hundreds of millions in restitution for victims. Similarly, the three-year campaign against The Associates resulted in an unprecedented program that allowed borrowers to automatically reduce their interest rates over the term of the loan, setting an example followed by lenders and investors nationwide.

NACA's affordable lending program is good business
The essential complement to NACA's relentless advocacy is its insight into the nature of lending. NACA has always sought to create a viable business model for affordable lending, relying not on a lender's philanthropy, but on their business acumen. By reinventing mortgage lending and exposing the darker side of the lending industry, NACA has worked to create fair relationships in which both communities and businesses can benefit. Some lenders, such as Bank of America and Citigroup, have sought out NACA as a valuable partner in reaching underserved communities and have achieved great success. When lenders have exploited low- and moderate-income and minority communities, as in the case of Fleet or The Associates, NACA proved to be a tireless foe.

Aggressive and personal advocacy
NACA has been accused of being overly aggressive and personal. NACA wears this as a badge of honor, leaving no stone unturned and often hounding CEOs from their shareholder meetings to their homes. The rationale is simple: lenders have a personal and often devastating impact on the lives of the people who they refuse to provide affordable credit to or take advantage of through predatory loans and scams. Families who are denied access to credit live with the consequences every day, often experiencing financial devastation and/or the loss of their homes.

Corporations prefer to hide behind a veil of anonymity, but in reality they are run by people who make decisions and are responsible for the consequences. NACA shines a spotlight on the CEOs, executives and directors who perpetrate financial injustice. NACA ensures that their neighbors, relatives and employees are made aware of their actions. In addition, NACA holds the decision-makers accountable to the public everywhere they go. NACA's hundreds of thousands of members across the country may appear at and disrupt their speeches, events, and meetings. Backed by extensive research, NACA and its members deliver a compelling wake-up call to decision makers everywhere, letting them know that they will be held personally accountable for their actions.

Revolutionizing lending for low- and moderate income families
Through a unique combination of aggressive advocacy and innovative approaches to lending, NACA has a history of transforming lending. NACA's early campaigns put the issue of predatory lending on the national agenda. Moreover, with over $10 billion in loan commitments and the best homeownership program in America, NACA has spearheaded a revolution in mortgage lending that features no down payments for low- and moderate-income people. The NACA homeownership program has reinvented mortgage lending for low- and moderate-income families.

Executives of financial institutions have amassed huge fortunes on the backs of hardworking American families. While living in their many luxurious homes, they have refused to restructure mortgages that would allow families to stay in their homes. ...

Here is a concrete way for those of us with predatory mortgages to change our situation, and also advise others who may have one of these "products" sold on Cape Cod by Cape Cod mortgage originators, when local Cape Cod banks would not offer it's own citizens financial products in house we looked to our originators for guidance. NACA will be working with us in the next few weeks and months, so we can cure some of the bad debts made here on Cape Cod.

What will the response of our local banks to foreclosures. How can we assist folks who have started foreclosure. How can we convince the Barnstable Sheriff's Department not to evict folks, and to persuade local banks to allow the use of local housing stocks to house the newly homeless folks, previously evicted. We need to change the way business is done if we are going to help folks in our own "Beloved Community" ! We need to be the change we want. Join us or come find out what we are doing. Together we can.
